The Uses of the Word, and Unbelief as the Radical Sin

ENUNBELIEF. Applied to weak and doubting disciples: Mark 16:14. And upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart. Matt. 17:20. And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief. Applied to Paul's condition of conscientious ignorance: 1 Tim. 1:13. But I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. But chiefly to "an evil heart of unbelief" (Heb. 3:12), indicating willful rejection of God's proffered mercy in Christ. Of such Christ said: John 3:18. He that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John 8:24. If ye believe not that I am He, ye shall die in your sins. John 16:9. Of sin, because they believe not on Me. The doom of the unbelieving: Rev. 21:8. But the fearful, and unbelieving . . . shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone. Heb. 3:19. So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief. The word is applied also to mere intellectual assent, as a form of belief: James 2:19. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

BSBHebrews 3:12 See to it, brothers, that none of you has a wicked heart of unbelief that turns away from the living God.

(Be not / Fret not) → 004 He that believeth not / If ye believe not that I am He / they believe not on Me:不用 do 的否定连见三处,构成约翰福音论『不信』的固定句式。

ENUnbelief is charged, in both Testaments, as the radical and vital sin, whose present and abiding product is condemnation to severance from God, from holiness and from happiness. In addition to the above passages: Hab. 1:5. For I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you. John 6:36. But I said unto you, That ye also have seen Me, and believe not. John 8:45. And because I tell you the truth, ye believe Me not. 2 Thes. 2:12. That they all might be damned who believed not the truth. Jude 5. Afterward destroyed them that believed not. In its practical working, "the evil heart of unbelief" is immediately impelled by a native prejudice, which renders it unwilling to investigate and consider the claims of God, of His law and of His gospel; by the pride engendered of self-conceit and self-will; and by the bias of strong desire that springs out of selfish indulgence and sinful living. For the removal of unbelief, therefore, it is essential on the man's part that he be willing to consider and heed the truth respecting his spiritual character, position and needs for both worlds; that he determinedly will to crush both pride and wrong selfish indulgence; that he make an utter surrender of his will to obedience and submission to God, his supreme and rightful Ruler; and that he reverse his whole course of thinking and living. This vital change of mind, of will and of life—this turning from self to God—is divinely assured to every one who desires and wills to submit and obey, to trust and serve the sovereign and redeeming God. To such an one Christ brings forgiveness, justification, childship and fellowship with God; to such an one the Holy Spirit imparts a new spiritual life. Thus, and only thus, is the unbeliever divinely transformed into a believer; thus is he made like to God, and so becomes an heir of God to the inheritance of eternal life with Christ.

BSBJohn 3:18 Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

语法参:though / if 从句中的虚拟语气(动词用原形) → 003 though it be told you:though + be(虚拟原形),古式让步(虽有人告诉你们)。
语法参:倒装(宾语/状语前置引起的主谓倒装) → 001 Thus, and only thus, is the unbeliever divinely transformed … ; thus is he made like to God:thus
所生(of = by,古式);bias:偏向。
