ENLIGHT AND DARKNESS. In the Scriptures, Light is closely connected with life and gladness; Darkness with misery and death. Light—God is Light: 1 John 1:5. This then is the message which we have heard of Him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. Ps. 84:11. The Lord God is a sun and shield. Mal. 4:2. The Sun of righteousness. Light is knowledge—God only has all knowledge; Christ is "the truth." Light is holiness—God alone is holy. Light is joy and peace—God is the infinite source and possessor of these: "My joy" and "My peace," said Christ. Light is glory, which is God's original, exclusive and immanent element and possession; and "the glory of God shineth in the face of Jesus Christ." God is the Giver of light, the Light of life. Testimonies of Old Testament saints: Ps. 4:6, 7. Lord, lift Thou up the light of Thy countenance upon us. Thou hast put gladness in my heart. Ps. 27:1. The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? Ps. 36:9. For with Thee is the fountain of life: in Thy light shall we see light. Ps. 43:3. O send out Thy light and Thy truth. Ps. 89:15. Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O Lord, in the light of Thy countenance. Ps. 97:11. Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart. Ps. 112:4. Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness. Isa. 2:5. Come ye, and let us walk in the light of the Lord. Isa. 50:10. He that hath no light, let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God. James 1:17. Every good gift and every perfect boon is from above, coming down from the Father of lights.

ENChrist the Light of the world, the Life of men: John 1:4, 9. In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. John 8:12. I am the light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 9:5. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. John 12:35, 36, 46. Yet a little while is the light with you. While ye have the light, believe in the light, that ye may become the children of light. I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on Me should not abide in darkness. 2 Cor. 4:6. God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 1 John 1:7. If we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin. 1 John 2:10. He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.

BSBJohn 8:12 Once again, Jesus spoke to the people and said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”

ENLight in the hereafter—heaven a sphere of light, the Lamb the light thereof: Zech. 14:7. At evening time it shall be light. Col. 1:12, 13. Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light; who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son. Isa. 60:19, 20. The Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory. Rev. 21:23. The glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. Rev. 22:5. The Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

BSBRevelation 21:23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, because the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its lamp.

ENDarkness—from light to darkness: Job 18:5, 18. The light of the wicked shall be put out. He shall be driven from light into darkness. Job 38:15. From the wicked their light is withholden. Isa. 5:20. Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness! Jer. 13:16. Give glory to the Lord your God, before He cause darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains; and, while ye look for light, He turn it into the shadow of death, and make it gross darkness. Matt. 6:23. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! John 3:19, 20. This is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 2 Cor. 6:14. What communion hath light with darkness? Heirs and heritage of darkness: Prov. 2:13. Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness. Prov. 4:19. The way of the wicked is as darkness. 1 John 2:11. He that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes. Job 10:22. A land of darkness, as darkness itself. Matt. 8:12; 22:13. The outer darkness. 2 Pet. 2:4. Delivered them into chains of darkness. Jude 6, 13. In everlasting chains under darkness; . . . to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.

BSBIsaiah 5:20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who turn darkness to light and light to darkness, who replace bitter with sweet and sweet with bitter.
