ENJUDGES, CIVIL. Characterized and charged by Moses. Requisites of ability and character: Ex. 18:21, 22. Thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. Charged by Moses: Ex. 23:6-8. (Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of thy poor. . . . And thou shalt take no gift: for a gift blindeth them that have sight, and perverteth the words of the righteous.) Deut. 1:17. (Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man: for the judgment is God's.) Lev. 19:15. (Thou shalt do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty.) Deut. 16:18-20. (Justice, and only justice, shalt thou follow.) See Civil Government.
BSBExodus 18:21 Furthermore, select capable men from among the people—God-fearing, trustworthy men who are averse to dishonest gain. Appoint them over the people as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.
